Let's Talk About...Facebook Updates
When you heard the news about (ANOTHER) round of new Facebook updates you probably fell into 1 of 2 categories:
#1 You cursed Zuckerberg, vowing never to say his name or sing his praises again, swore off Facebook, and maybe, just maybe and you even deleted your Facebook app on your phone (only to re-download it hours later - it's cool, we did it too).
#2 You embraced change and you went back to the drawing board to figure out how to use this new update to your advantage.
A little of reactions #1 + #2.
Everyone panics when Facebook updates happen. It even makes the National morning, afternoon, and evening news cycles... and of course CNN will have it going every 15 minutes. Some users go so far as to think it's the end of the world. We're pretty sure we heard Zucker-pocolypse drop more than once in the coverage.
Here's the hardcore truth. Facebook and Mr. Zuckerberg run a business and the #1 goal for that business is to bring in the dollars. Let's face it, isn't that what we're all doing?
So the update shouldn't be a surprise to entrepreneurs, business owners and anyone who uses Facebook to grow their company.
So What Can You Do?
Relax and Accept the Crazy
First off accept that this is happening (and will happen again), and no matter how often you scream or complain online, these changes not going away. So grab your favorite drink, pull up a chair, and let's talk about what these changes mean.
- The Facebook platform for business pages are basically pay to play. If you want a new audience to view + engage in your content and what you're selling, you'll have to pay to run ads on Facebook. Be sure to split test your ads, meaning if you have an ad to run, take two different photos or film 2 different videos. Run them simultaneously and compare their performance after 48 hours. If one tank, drop it like it's hot. If one is running crazy, keep it running. You'll only know what your audience likes by testing their response.
- Make your content shareable. Literally ask your your current followers to share the post. BUT create a post is entertaining, educational, blatantly shows product/service, and allows your audience to be able to connect with you easily and quickly. (One piece of great content is better then 10 pieces of mediocre content.)
- Engagement is key to getting your posts seen. Find different ways to get your followers to engage with your posts. Ask questions and answer meaningfully. Share a story that will resonate with them. Be authentic. Your audience is human and loves reasons to connect with other humans. It's just what we do.
